On October 18, 2013, partners Patrick Moran and Martin McManaman gave a one-hour presentation at the Illinois Municipal League’s 100th Annual Conference in Chicago entitled “Avoiding Section 1983 Liability in Employment Claims: Special Considerations for Supervisor Level Employees.” The presentation focused on how supervisor level municipal employees and elected officials can reduce the risk of employment discrimination lawsuits being filed against them personally under Section 1983 by subordinate municipal employees. The presentation also addressed the effect of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in Vance v. Ball State, which narrowed the definition of a supervisor in Title VII cases, on analogous Section 1983 claims.
